Kiva micro loans
Liz and I discovered kiva while watching Frontline and making crafts. We were reminded of the remarkable book and movement Banker to the Poor. As Liz said, it's the only economics book that will make you cry. It is so f-ing lame to feel helpless- not contributing much more than CO2 to the planet on most days, so it feels really gratifying to do something good. Almost all micro loans are paid back. Most local money lenders and banks charge between 35-300% interest on the smallest of loans in poverty-stricken countries. We both immediately went online, like tons of other folks (evidenced by the crashing, failing site) to become members and assuage our rich, white American pig-dog guilt. Can't recommend it enough!
